Translation of Law No. 58 of 1937

The Translation of Law No. 58 of 1937 provides an English version of Egypt’s main criminal legislation, the Penal Code. Law No. 58 of 1937 came into force on 15 October 1937 and replaced the criminal codes previously applied before the Native Courts and Mixed Courts.

The Penal Code establishes the general foundations of criminal law in Egypt. It defines how criminal provisions apply, classifies crimes into felonies, misdemeanors, and contraventions, and sets out the principal and ancillary penalties that may be imposed. It also addresses important concepts such as criminal participation, attempt, recidivism, suspension of penalties, pardon, and grounds for non-punishment.

This translation of the penal code helps English-speaking readers understand the structure and substance of Egypt’s criminal law framework. It covers not only general criminal principles but also provisions relating to offenses affecting public interests, government security, public order, individuals, property, and other areas regulated by criminal law.

As an English version of the penal code, this publication is a useful reference for legal professionals, researchers, investors, and anyone seeking to review Egyptian criminal legislation in English. The Translation of Law No. 58 of 1937 supports access to Law No. 58 of 1937 by presenting the translation of the penal code in a clearer format for non-Arabic readers looking for an English version of the penal code.
